In a world where location data and its applications have become integral to almost everything, understanding the technology behind these platforms has become sacrosanct. Notably, a volume of people now leverages geospatial technology to track their belongings, obtain location positions and get through their daily activities. However, geospatial technology is a much wider concept in its potentials and applications.

Over the past few decades, the technology has witnessed a consistent change of face in its usage. It has grown to become an important scientific finding and tool which moved the possibilities of humankind a further notch. More so, since the world is becoming increasingly geospatially inclined and there is a need to study trends, patterns and communicate these data with special technologies, demystifying geospatial technology becomes important.

What is Geospatial technology?

Geospatial technology is a term used to describe the range of tools that facilitate the acquisition, manipulation, storage, and display of geographic information. It is a conglomerate of several technologies such as photogrammetry, remote sensing, geographic information systems, and global navigation satellite system (GNSS).

The multi-disciplinary concept of geospatial technology has helped it solve many problems across several industries. It is of no surprise that the technology is being consistently incorporated at various scales in principal sectors. More so, with the significant increase in the availability of remote sensing imagery with high temporal, spatial, radiometric, and spectral resolutions, individuals and organizations can now apply satellite images to more extensive areas of applications. Unsurprisingly, the current growth of geospatial technologies has earned it a place as one of the emerging technologies.

Applications of Geospatial technologies

Geospatial technologies have created a foundation upon which numerous advanced tools are being developed. Its applications have doubled as a foundation and collaborating technology. Notably, using geospatial technology is comparatively intensive and simple, while its potentials are borderline unlimited. They are consolidated in almost any industry where location is important. Even though it is difficult to name an industry that does not use geospatial technologies, the prospects are the strongest point of this fascinating technology. Geospatial technology enhances weighted decision-making and allows even more accurate analysis.

Examples of how geospatial technology is applied:

Meteorology: What better way to achieve accurate weather forecasts if not through a versatile concept like Geospatial Technology. With improved satellite resolutions and other near-earth orbiting platforms that identify as geospatial technologies, it has become more natural to obtained informed data about weather conditions in various territories.

Healthcare: In the past decade, geospatial technology has proven itself as a valuable technology in the management of epidemic outbreaks, healthcare emergency response, and disease radius identification. With even more techniques being developed, geospatial technology is poised to become the leading technology in the healthcare industry.

Agriculture: In recent years, farmers have grown to appreciate the input of geospatial technology in achieving an improved production level. Technologies like precision agriculture have now made it possible to employ optimum input to obtain maximum output while cutting out losses.

Marketing and advertising: In recent times, geo-marketing and geotargeting have become integral business methods to reach target customers. Advanced geospatial technologies now allow firms to create targeted ads for relevant regions and audiences.

Logistics: Geospatial technology has helped improve the tracking of goods, and precise location information of commodities for all interested parties.

Transportation: Improved route management for vehicles. Geospatial technologies have also revolutionized the process of navigation through real-time traffic data.
